SOLIDARITY WITH PINAR SELEK

From the Confederación Intersindical Galega, we join to the international campaign in support to the sociologist Pinar Selek led by different Turkish women’s associations.
Pinar Selek is one of the most representative figures of Turkey, feminist, antimilitarist and peace activist, she is being harassed to be taken to court for the third time when she was already acquitted of the same charges twice before. This time, Pinar faces a life imprisonment in Turkey; she was required by the Penal Court number 9. After being accused in 1998 of taking part in a Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) attack in a bazaar in Istanbul, after being tortured and after spent more than two years and a half in imprisonment, finally the court sentenced that the supposed attack was actually a gas explosion. But the public prosecutor appealed, and Selek continues being technically processed.

Pinar Selek was tortured, imprisoned and she continues being accused by the simple fact of devoting her life to fight in favour of peace and against all types of violence in her country. She is a victim of a political plot judiciary that persecutes to those who raise their voice against the system. In spite of everything, she didn’t keep quiet; she took part in numerous conferences, seminars about gender, militarism, violence, ecology, mass media, street children and marginalized groups. She wrote in several newspapers and scientific magazines, she is member of a cooperative; she is the editor and the coordinator of the Feminist Magazine Amargi, and she is also the co-founder of the first feminist bookshop in Turkey.
The organizations that support Pinar Selek must take the baton of her fight, that’s why we call all our membership and all citizenship to spread this campaign, reporting the injustice of our mate’s imprisonment whose life is devoted to defend women and the most disadvantaged people and to work with Kurdish people. Turkish government can’t silence all the voices that shout loud for her absolution and freedom.
Therefore, from the Confederación Intersindical Galega, we declare our solidarity with Pinar Selek and we demand justice for this activist.
